The Hunger Games~ Ch.10

Chapter 10
1. Why does Peeta reveal his love for Katniss? Do you think he really loves her? Why or why not?
~ I think Peeta reveals his love for Katniss so more sponsors will want both of them. Also because their will be more "drama" in the hunger games. Yes, I do think Peeta really loves Katniss. I think he loves her because whenever Katniss talks about Gale, he always insists that he is her boyfriend. I think he gets jealous whenever she mentions Gale.

2. What is Peeta's main concern during the hunger games?
~ Peeta wants to die as himself. He doesn't want to turn into something he is not like a monster. When the time comes he says he will kill. He won't go down without a fight. He wants to show the Capitol that they don't own him.
 3. How does the Capitol view the previous arenas of the hunger games? How many games have there been?
~  The arenas are historic sites. They preserve them after the games. They are popular destinations where people from the Capitol can come and vist or vacation. They can go for a month and rewatch the games, tour the catacombs, visit the places where the deaths took place. You can even take part in reenactments. There has been 73 Hunger Games not including this one.

4. What do you feel is the purpose of the hunger games?
~ I feel that the purpose of the hunger games is just to show the districts that the capitol has power over them. It si so the Districts can be scared of them.

Important Quotes
~ "Peeta has only just stepped from his car when I slam my palms into his chest. He loses his balance and crashes into an ugly urn filled with fake flowers. The urn tips and shatters into hundreds of tiny pieces. Peeta lands in the shards, and blood immediately flows from his hands." (134)
~ " 'You're all they're talking about. The star-crossed lovers from District Twelve! ' says Haymitch. 'But we're not star-crossed lovers!' I say. " (135)
~"Tomorrow we will be in the arena. He has done me a favor and I have answered him with injury. When will I ever stop owing him." (137)
~ "Nervousness seeps into terror as I anticipate what is to come." (146)
~ " Ladies and gentlemen, let the Seventy-fourth Hunger Games begin! " (147)

The Hunger Games~ Ch.9

Chapter 9
1. Describe Katniss' interview attire and training? What affect do you think it had on the audience?
~ During training they didn't go to the weapons section. They didn't go to the sections that they were good at. They didn't go to those sections that they were good at because they didn't want the other tributes to know what their greatest skills were. They just stuck to the sections like were they taught you how to tie a rope. Katniss' dress had many gems on it. With all those gems on it it made her dress look like it was on fire because it sparkled a lot. The audience might have liked her dress a lot because it looked like she was on fire the same way she was at the opening ceremony.

2. How does Haymitch and Cinna ask Katniss to behave?
~ They both tell Katniss to act the opposite of how she feels. They tell her to make it seem like she likes the people from the Capitol even though she doesn't. They say when the interviewer asks her a question to look at the audience and to find Cinna. She answers to Cinna. That is how they tell her to behave.

3. What do we discover about Peeta during his interview?
~ We discover that Peeta likes Katniss. We also discover that he thinks that Gale is her boyfriend. Also that all the guys back home, in District 12, like her to. She is shocked because he caught her off guard. Then she feels embarrassed.
Important Quotes
~ "I noticed he rejected the invitations from the Career Tributes to join their crowd." (126)
~ "And then they're calling Katniss Everdeen, and I feel myself, as if in a dream, standing and making my way center stage." (127)
~ " ' Handsome lad like you. There must be some special girl. Come on, what's her name?' says Caesar. Peeta sighs. ' Well, there is this one girl. I've had a crush on her since I can remember. But I'm pretty sure she didn't know I was alive until the reaping.' " (130)
~ " 'She has another fellow?' asks Caeser. 'I don't know, but a lot of boys like her,' says Peeta. 'So, here's what you do. You win, you go home. She can't turn you down then, eh?' says Caesar encouragingly. 'I don't think it's going to work out. Winning . . . won't help in my case, ' says Peeta. 'Why ever not?' says Caesar, mystified. Peeta blushes beet red and stammers out. 'Because . . . because . . . she came here with me. ' " (130)

Tribute Trial

~I lost the tribute trial. My percentage was 91%. I could have done things differently like have gotten more allies.

The Hunger Games ~ Ch. 8

Chapter 8
1. What do the scores in the trainings mean to the tributes? What scores do Peeta and Katniss receive?
~ The scores mean how good they are at something. Like Katniss showed her special skill which is shooting an arrow. Peeta showed the Gamemakers his greatest skill which is carrying heavy things. Peeta recieved an eight. Katniss recieved an eleven.

2. How did Katniss and Gale meet? Describe their story.
~ They met when Katniss saw a dead rabbit hanging from a tree. Then Gale springed out and said, "That's dangerous." Gale was only fourteen then, but he was six feet tall and was as good as an adult. Then he said "Well, Catnip, stealing's punishable by death, or hadn't you heard?" Then Katniss said her name louder beacause she thought he heard it wrong and made it clear that she wasn't going to steal it. Then he saw her arrows and then he smiled. They just talked about hunting, but as they got closer they became friends.

Important Quotes
~ "Now I've done ot! Now I've ruined everything! If I'd stood even a ghost chance, it vanished when I sent that arrow flying at the Gamemakers." (103)
~ "Now I'm sure I'll have the lowest score of the twenty-four. If no one sponsors me, my odds of staying alive decrease to almost zero." (105)
~ "I dig my fingernails into my palms as my face comes up, expecting the worst. Then they're flashing the number eleven on the screen. Eleven!" (108)
~ "Gale gave me a sense of security I'd lacked since my father's death." (112)

Hunger Games ~ Ch. 7

Chapter 7
1 What are the pros and cons of Peeta and Katniss being coached together?
~Some of the pros are they might find out the things they are good at. A con is that they use their weaknesses against eachother. But if they train together they can help each other with eachothers weaknesses. One of the pros is they could become allies and work together to kill the other tributes. Those are the pros and cons that I think they would have.

2 What reasons does Peeta give for thinking Katniss will be better than him in the arena?
~He said his father loved the squirrels she hunted down for him because she doesn' shoot the body. His father likes the fact that she shoots it in the eye and never misses. He even says she can hunt and kill a deer. Also that his mother said that Katniss will come back being the winner.
3.What are Career Tributes and how are they a threat?
~Career tributes are the tributes who train ahead of time so they could win the hunger games. They are a threat because they already know how to play the game.  They know how to handle deadly weapons. They now how to defend themselves. They have already figured out where to hide and how they are going to play the game.

4 What does Katniss do to get the Gamemakers' attention?
~ When it is Katniss' turn, the Gamemakers seem kind of bored. They are not paying attention because she is the second to last tribute and they are tired. Plus, they might also be distracted by the pig that was being brought in. She got angry so she threw an arrow in their direction. It peirced the apple in the roasted pigs mouth. Then it went through the apple and into the wall.
Important Quotes
~"So lets get down to business. Training. First off, if you like , I'll coach you separately."  (88)
~"People will help you in the arena." (91)

~"One last thing. I want you by each other's side every minute."(92)
~"Not that Haymitch and Effie are fighting anymore. Instead they seem to be of one mind, determind to whip us into shape." (99)

Hunger Games ~ Ch. 6

Chapter 6
1. What is an Avox? How does Katniss know the Avox?

~ An Avox is someone who committed a crime. They cut their tongues off so they can’t speak. One day while Gale and Katniss were hunting, the birds stopped singing except for one. It was giving a warning call. Then they saw that girl and a boy running as if their life depended on it. Then a hovercraft appeared, it dropped a net on the girl and swooped her up. As for the boy they threw some sort of spear at him and then hauled him up. Katniss was pretty sure he was dead when the girl screamed the boy’s name and they were gone.

~ Some sort of force field prevents the tributes from jumping off the roof. This is in place so they could prevent the players from committing suicide and watch them die in the arena.

~ “We’re the first team she’s ever chaperoned that made a splash at the opening ceremonies.” (73)
~ “ ‘Don’t be ridiculous, Katniss. How could you possibly know an Avox?’ snaps Effie. ‘ The very thought.’ “ (77)~ “ We both know he covered for me. So here I am in his debt again. If I tell him the truth about the girl, somehow that might even things up.” (79)
~ “I’d set out to tell her I was sorry about dinner. But I know that my apology runs much deeper. That I’m ashamed I never tried to help her in the woods. that I let the Capitol kill the boy and mutilate her without lifting a finger.” (85)
3. What reasons would Peeta have for being curious about Gale?~Maybe Peeta is jealous about Gale. He might be jealous because it seems like Gale and Katniss are in a relationship when Peeta likes Katniss. He might also be jealous because they have been through a lot together.
Important Quotes
2. What prevents tributes from jumping off
the roof? Why do you think this is in place?

The Hunger Games ~ Ch.5

Chapter 5
1. The presentation of the tributes seems to be greatly focused on visual presentation and looks -- what does this reveal about the belief systems of the Capitol?
~ I think this reveals that they care more about their looks. It seems like they don't really care what is on the inside. They don't care if the most hadsome or prettiest person is the most stupid. They could even be the most intelligent person, but they won't care as long as they have good looks.

2. Compare and contrast life in the Capitol to life in District 12.
~ In the Capitol you don't need to work hard to get your food, all you need to do is push a button and you have food infront of you. Whereas people in District 12 are poor and can't afford food so it is common for people to starve to death. In the Capitol, no one wants to be fat or overweight. In District 12, it is completely different, they get jealous everytime they see an overweight person. People in the capitol don't know how it is to go a day without eating.

3. What does Cinna ask Katniss and Peeta to do just before they ride out in their chariot? What is the purpose of this gesture?
~ Cinna asks Katniss and Peeta to hold hands. The purpose of them holding hands is for them to look like team mates or friends even though they are going to try to kill each other later.

4. Why is it so hard for Katniss to trust Peeta's kindness?
~ She feels like if she starts to trust him he might betray her and make it easier for him to kill her.

Important Quotes
~ "What must it be like, I wonder, to live in a world where food appears at the press of a button? How would I spend the hours I now commit to combing the woods for sustenance if it were so easy to come by?" (65)
~ "For the first time, I feel a flicker of hope rising up in me. Surely, there must be one sponsor willing to take me on! And with a little extra help, some food, the right weapon, why should I count myself out of the Games?" (70)
~ "So I keep holding on, but I can't help feeling strange about the way Cinna has linked us together. It's not really fair to present us as a team and then lock us into the arena to kill each other." (71)
~ "A warning bell goes off in my head. Don't be so stupid. Peeta is planning how to kill you, I remind myself. He is luring you in to make you easy prey. The more likable he is, the more deadly he is." (72)

2. What does Katniss mean when she says: “A Kind Peeta Mellark is far more dangerous to me than an unkind one”?

4. What act of kindness does Peeta’s dad show to Katniss? How do you think this man might of influenced his son?

~ To get her hands on a bow and arrows.

3. What kind of person do you think Peeta is? What evidence from the book led you to come to this conclusion?
~ I think Peeta is a nice and kind person. I think he is a nice person because he gave Katniss bread when she was starving. He even got hurt getting the bread for Katniss.
4. Why does seeing the dandelion after her father's death give Katniss hope?

tribute!' "  (pg. 22)
~" Prim is screaming hysterically behind me. She's wrapped her skinny arms around me like a vice. 'No, Katniss! No! You can't go!" (pg. 23)

~"Oh, well, I think. There will be twenty-four of us. Odds are someone else will kill him before I do." (pg. 33)

The Hunger Games ~ Ch 1

Chapter 1
1. Describe District 12.
~ District 12 is the last district of all the districts. It is the poorest of all districts. They mine coals in that district underground. Since they are the most poor they can't afford enough meals for their families. That is how I describe district 12.

2. What illegal activity does Katniss participate in doing? Why does she need to do this?
~ The illegal activity that Katniss does is hunting. She does this to support her family. She hunts because her father died in the mines. She also hunts because they can't afford food. That is why she hunts.

3. Describe the relationship between Gale and Katniss. Do you have a relationship like this in your own life? Explain.
~Gale and Katniss are good friends. They are a team when they hunt. They look out for each other. I do have a relationship like this. It's with my mom, she is my best friend and we look out for each other.

4. How is Madge different from Katniss and Gale?
~ Madge is the mayors daughter. She's not as poor as them. She can afford the things they can't. She doesn't need to hunt in the woods. That is how she is different from them.

5. What is the reaping? Do you think this practice is fair? Explain.
Reaping day is the day they choose a boy and a girl to participate in the Hunger Games. No, i don't think this is fair. It is not fair because people that are twelve can be picked and they really don't stand a chance. Other districts might pick eighteen year olds and the twelve year olds have to compete with them. That is what I think of the reaping.

6. Who is selected at the reaping?
~ Primrose Everdeen is selected. (she is only 12)
